Patent Counsel

In this vest, you will be responsible for the international legal protection of the knowledge and of the technological capital of the Company.
You will work in an international environment and will be part of the Intellectual Property Rights team. Your role will provide input to the Patent legal strategy and you will be involved with the protection of the technological continuous advancement.

This is a permanent position based in Modena, Italy. 

What You Will Do

As Patent Counsel in this position you will:

  • Manage the Patent portfolio for one or more of the D&E units, by advising on legal risks and always acting with integrity and in the best interest of the Group;
  • Apply specialised Patent legal knowledge to solve business problems;
  • Ensure that technological innovative projects would not conflict with already patented creations;
  • Help select and manage the worldwide network of external counsel;
  • Lead IPR reviews for one or more of the D&E units to decide on disposition of IPR matters;
  • Identify inventions and evaluate the business relevance of inventions and various prospective IPR;
  • Draft, file and prosecute patent applications in multiple jurisdictions, directly in Europe and though outside counsel in other jurisdictions;
  • Conduct patent opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office;
  • Lead validity and infringement studies and advice upon potential risks related to third party IPR;
  • Support patent and other IPR related litigation;
  • Provide IPR training and guidance to project managers, internal development teams and Senior Management.

Who You Are

We believe that you have: 

  • Have a Master’s Degree in technical studies preferably mechanical/electronic/automation engineering, material science, or comparable
  • Be a European Patent Attorney full or part qualified or equivalent;
  • Have at least 4 years of professional experience as a patent engineer in a legal firm or in a Company, preferably with expertise on the field of automation or manufacturing;
  • Have the capability to relate with multiple stakeholders the ability to influence the development of long-term plans and policy development; and strong communication skills;
  • He fully proficient in written and spoken English. Being fluent in Italian or German is a plus;
  • Have strong communication skills, the ability to interact on all levels within the organization and possess a high level of integrity. You are structured, analytical and thorough; 
  • Be result oriented at the same time as you have the ability to maintain a high level of quality;
  • Enjoy working both independently and as part of a team.
