Job Summary

Business Stream New Food is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Technologist to lead the New Food, Technology Development Center (TDC), laboratory for fermentation-based food production. This role is crucial in advancing scientific research through various laboratory procedures and contributing directly to internal projects and customer trials. 
Working within our New Food fermentation pilot line, you will be involved in cutting-edge biotechnology and biohazard level one management, ensuring the highest safety and quality standards.
It also includes laboratory work for our other technology areas in the TDC site.
The position is located in Karlshamn, Sweden, but it offers opportunities to collaborate globally as part of our innovative biotechnology-focused team.

What you will do

As a Laboratory Technologist, you will play a key role in supporting the development and testing of fermentation technologies, handling microbial strains, preparing growth media, and maintaining the operational integrity of bioreactors. 
You will work hands-on with microbial strains and be involved in every step of the fermentation process, from inoculation to sampling and data analysis. Your expertise will be critical in ensuring that our laboratory work meets the highest quality control standards, regulatory compliance, and HACCP standards.

  • Support internal projects and customer trials through laboratory work with the New Food fermentation pilot line, plant-based pilot and core technology areas.
  • Chemistry and Microbiology
    • OHS/QA/QC procedures and documentation 
    • Consumable ordering
    • Chemistry and Microbiological waste handling
  • GMP practice monitoring, such as CIP verification, environmental air controls and trend analysis.
  • Initialise, maintain and update action and critical limits for standard operating procedures of all equipment and processes in the pilot plants and laboratory.
  • Handle microbial strains, including preparing pure cultures, freezing, and performing microscopy checks.
  • Prepare and sterilise media for both shake flask cultures and bioreactors, including weighing, pH measurement, autoclaving, and sterile filtration.
  • Conduct bioreactor sampling during fermentation and measure growth through techniques such as biomass counting, spectrophotometry, and microscopy.
  • Inoculate shake flasks and bioreactors to ensure successful fermentation processes.
  • Develop and apply standard laboratory approaches (GLP) and best practices for the efficient and safe execution of experiments.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and implement procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Analyse test results, compile data, and prepare summaries of findings to support internal teams and customer-facing projects.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of tests and experiments.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with experiments, tests, or equipment to prevent errors and ensure the validity of results.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in laboratory techniques and technologies, driving the implementation of innovative solutions.
  • Support the evaluation of microorganism risk classifications within the biosafety committee to ensure a secure laboratory environment.

We believe you have

  • A degree in microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field with experience in fermentation processes and lab work.
  • Proven experience in handling microbial strains and preparing growth media for fermentation.
  • Strong laboratory skills, with a solid understanding of bioreactors and microbial growth measurement techniques.
  • A focus on quality control and a keen ability to troubleshoot and resolve laboratory issues.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with experience in data analysis and reporting.
  • A commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant working environment, following strict regulatory standards.
